Women working across Australia’s cafe and restaurant industry will gather at Ormeggio at The Spit on March 9 for an International Women’s Day event designed to tackle the real challenges facing female leaders in hospitality.
Organised by Women in Cafes and Restaurants (WCR), the intimate gathering expects to draw 50-60 owners, operators, leaders and managers for a day centered on honest conversation and practical solutions.
Aligned with the 2026 UN theme “Balance the Scales,” the event addresses what organisers describe as the disproportionate emotional, financial and organisational load women often carry in the industry.
“This event is not about doing more, it’s about making work and life in hospitality more sustainable,” organisers stated in the event brief.
The program features a panel discussion bringing together accomplished hospitality figures including Anna Pavoni, founder of Maestro Hospitality; Amanda Fuller, chef and director of food and beverage at Accor; Sandra Hudson, owner of Hudson’s Bakery; and Vanessa Crighton, CEO of Margaret Family. The panel will explore how the industry can balance the scales and support women’s success.
Critical topics on the agenda
Three keynote speakers will address critical topics rarely discussed openly in the fast-paced hospitality environment.
Laura Goldberg, co-owner and COO of Hurricane’s Grill and founder of WCR, will speak on people-first leadership and mental health advocacy.
Amanda Thompson, founder of Endurance Financial, will tackle financial confidence and independence.
Sally Branson, founder of The Sally Branson Consulting Group, will share insights on crisis leadership and values-led management. Tawnya Bahr, group executive chef for Orchard Early Learning Centres, will serve as MC.
The event concludes with lunch at Chiosco by Ormeggio, providing space for networking and connection among participants.
WCR was founded on the premise that women in hospitality thrive when supported both professionally and personally. The national community focuses on mental health and wellbeing, practical business education, leadership development, and creating safe spaces for conversation within an industry known for its demanding pace and pressures.
