Tassie’s ‘Eat Local, Stay Local’ delivers economic boost for hospitality

Time is running out for Tasmanians to redeem the remaining dining vouchers that have injected millions into the state’s hospitality sector.

Hobart eateries, alongside others across the state, set to benefit from government vouchers scheme.

The Tasmanian Government is urging the 58,000 recipients of ‘Eat Local, Stay Local’ vouchers to use them before the November 30 deadline, as the program delivers what industry leaders are calling a much-needed boost to restaurants and tourism operators during the shoulder season.

The vouchers, distributed to eligible registered Tasmanians on 1 September, can be used for dining experiences, short breaks, or tourism activities across the state.

Minister for Tourism, Events and Hospitality Jane Howlett said the initiative has achieved its dual purpose of supporting local businesses while easing cost-of-living pressures for families.

“I’ve had amazing feedback from both voucher recipients and businesses on this program,” Minister Howlett said. “Operators have benefited from an extra boost in patronage and Tasmanians have been given an incentive to spend in our visitor economy.”

The minister emphasised the program’s broader economic impact, noting that for every dollar spent in Tasmania’s tourism and hospitality sector, another 83 cents is generated in the state’s economy.

The program comes as hospitality businesses across Australia continue to navigate challenging economic conditions, with government voucher schemes emerging as a popular stimulus tool in several states.

Hospitality Tasmania CEO Steve Old praised the program’s timing and effectiveness: “Eat Local, Stay Local has delivered exactly what our sector needs – people through the doors, regional spending, and real support for operators working hard during shoulder season. When locals get out and enjoy what’s on offer, everyone wins.”

Voucher recipients must purchase and complete their eligible activity by 30 November 30 2025, though claims can be lodged until 16 January 2026.
