One of the world’s most coveted restaurant real estate addresses is about to get a major upgrade.
Applejack Hospitality, the Sydney-based operator appointed last August to run the Sydney Opera House’s harbourside dining venues, has announced phased renovations of both Opera Bar and House Canteen — two of Australia’s most high-profile food and beverage destinations.
The work begins on 9 March, when House Canteen will close its kitchen and cafe for a full refresh expected to run until June 2026. The renovation will deliver a new look, an updated offering, improved guest amenities, and a rebrand.
While construction is underway next door, Opera Bar will remain open and extend its signature menus across the entire outdoor area, with a pop-up cafe handling morning coffee service throughout the closure.
Once House Canteen reopens, attention shifts to Opera Bar itself. The beloved waterfront venue — which sits on the lower concourse of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed building with sweeping views of Sydney Harbour — will receive a new kitchen, a new bar, and additional indoor seating.
Applejack is targeting a reopening ahead of the busy summer season, which means work will continue through the Australian winter months.
Both renovations include a notable back-of-house component: the kitchens at both venues will be fully electrified, eliminating gas in line with the Opera House’s decarbonisation commitments. The Green Room kitchen went electric last year, with the rest of the organisation’s dining operations expected to follow in the coming years.
A new chapter for Applejack
Applejack secured the venues through a competitive public tender, signing a 10-year agreement.
Since taking over, the group has moved quickly to establish its identity — introducing locally driven menus, a refreshed music program, and operational upgrades.
The refurbishments represent a significant capital investment and signal long-term ambitions at one of the most visited tourist sites in the Southern Hemisphere.
Specific reopening dates will be confirmed closer to completion.
