Just Eat Takeaway.com is pulling the plug on its Australian operations, bringing an end to Menulog’s two-decade presence in the country’s competitive food delivery market.
The Netherlands-based delivery giant announced it will cease operations in Australia at midnight on 26 November, affecting approximately 120 employees.
The company cited “challenging circumstances” and a strategic pivot to focus resources on other markets.
“Today is a tough day for the Menulog business, and I would like to reassure everyone this decision was not taken lightly,” said Morten Belling, Managing Director of Menulog, in a statement.
The exit marks a significant retreat from one of the Asia-Pacific region’s most highly contested delivery markets, where Menulog competed with rivals such as Uber Eats and DoorDash.
At the time of closure, Menulog connected customers with more than 35,000 local food, grocery and retail businesses across Australia.
Just Eat Takeaway said the decision reflects its focus on “accelerating growth and investments in other markets and to deliver the best experience for customers, partners and couriers.”
The company is providing affected employees with redundancy packages that exceed legal requirements, as well as outplacement support. Customers will have a two-week transition period to redeem unused vouchers and credits, while eligible couriers will receive a four-week voluntary payment.
Menulog, which provided online ordering and delivery solutions to its restaurant partners, positioned itself as an industry advocate for courier benefits and protections. The platform remained one of Australia’s leading on-demand delivery services.
The shutdown represents another consolidation in the global food delivery sector, which has faced pressure to achieve profitability amid intense competition and rising operational costs.
