A Sydney-based oil management company has been named World’s Leading Small Sustainable Organisation 2025 at the World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards held in Dubai last month.
EcoFry, which operates a closed-loop cooking oil service across New South Wales, was selected from a shortlist of international organisations for its approach to foodservice waste management.
The company delivers fresh Australian canola oil to hospitality venues, collects used oil, and processes it into renewable products, including biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuel.
Founded by Blair Kerr, the business has built its model around reducing waste in commercial kitchens while providing an alternative disposal solution for used cooking oil. The company’s recognition comes as the hospitality industry faces increasing pressure to demonstrate measurable environmental outcomes.
“Starting EcoFry at 19, my vision was to create a closed-loop service that protects the planet while providing Australian foodservice operators with a quality oil they can rely on,” Kerr said in a statement.
The award judges evaluated organisations based on measurable environmental impact, service delivery, and innovation in resource recovery. EcoFry’s model prevents used cooking oil from entering waste streams, where it can cause environmental damage, instead converting it into fuel products.
National Sales and Marketing Manager John McFadden said the company’s approach depends on collaboration with foodservice operators: “By working closely with the foodservice industry, we’re able to deliver practical sustainability solutions that reduce waste and add real value to kitchens every day.”
The company has indicated plans to expand its services and partnerships within the Australian market.
