Three Australian establishments have earned prestigious spots on the World’s 25 Best Burgers list, released by Upper Cut Media as part of their annual World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants guide, highlighting the nation’s growing reputation for elevated casual dining.
Next Door in Double Bay and The Gidley in the CBD both made the coveted international ranking from Sydney, while Melbourne newcomer Charrd Burger in Brunswick East also secured recognition. The three venues showcase distinctly different approaches to burger excellence, reflecting Australia’s diverse culinary landscape.
Next Door, the more casual sibling to Neil Perry’s fine-dining flagship Margaret, impressed judges with its American cheeseburger featuring a CopperTree Farms beef patty that earned recognition as “one of the two best patties we tasted in the last 12 months.” The burger combines rose mayo, perfectly balanced ketchup, crunchy pickles and onions in what judges called “…Perry’s interpretation of a classic – refined with premium ingredients and executed with precision”.
Meanwhile, The Gidley’s burger has achieved what the guide describes as “cult status” among Sydney diners. The underground steakhouse creates its patty from a blend of premium Australian beef cuts, served with melted cheese and pickles in one of the city’s most atmospheric dining rooms beneath Hunter Street.
In Melbourne, Charrd Burger has quickly made its mark despite operating from an unassuming side entrance in Brunswick East. The newcomer focuses on just two signature burgers, with patties made from a carefully selected blend sourced from Madina Halal Butchers and cooked over open charcoal. This technique imparts what judges called “…a distinctive smokiness and depth of flavour,” with their signature double elevated by truffle aioli, chilli jam, caramelised onions and sharp cheddar.
The recognition underscores a broader trend of high-end restaurants elevating the humble burger beyond fast-food territory, placing Australia alongside global culinary capitals in the burger category.
